How We Began

Proteqt Children’s Foundation began quite by accident. In 2003 the Lester B. Pearson United World College in Vancouver, Canada introduced a Third Year Option as part of its International Baccalaureate Program. One of the students selected for this pilot project was a 17-year old Barbadian, Christopher Evelyn, who teamed up with a Lithuanian and a South African student to spend a year doing humanitarian service in the Canadian Arctic and then in Rakai District, Uganda. During his 5 month place in Uganda, Christopher taught at the Sabina Children’s Home and Boarding Primary School.

Two years later in 2005, Christopher received a letter from Mathius Luwaga, an alumnus of the orphanage who requested financial assistance to continue his schooling. By this time Christopher was at University. His parents therefore took the matter in hand and having confirmed the authenticity of the request, agreed to finance Mathius’ education. Mathius was therefore able to complete his primary and secondary education as well as an undergraduate degree at Makerere University, the oldest and one of the best universities in Uganda.

Mathius and his “adopted mom”, Dr. Veronica Evelyn

Mathius’ Barbadian mom, Dr. Veronica Evelyn, visited Uganda on a fact finding mission in April (12th-28th), 2007. The purpose of this trip was to assess the needs of AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children in the Rakai District with a view to setting up a formal educational sponsorship program in Barbados. Findings made led to the establishment of a non-profit organization dedicated to motivating and providing opportunities for Barbadian’s to help create a better life for orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda.

Proteqt Children’s Foundation became a registered charity in Barbados in 2008 and Putting Children First Later became a registered NOn Governmental organization (NGO) in UGanda.
